Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery completed the second phase of the Our Lady of Peace cremation garden. The latest addition features an expansion of the columbarium adding 60 double niche units and 28 single niches. Two planters will hold approximately 50 cremation graves with stunning views of Forest Park and Mt. St. Helens. These additions help create a welcoming and peaceful environment for families and friends to remember their loved ones. Call today for a tour of the latest cemetery addition.
Last month, Your Catholic Cemeteries completed their four-year irrigation project at Gethsemani Cemetery. This state-of-the-art system, controlled entirely from the computer, uses less energy to keep the cemetery irrigated and provides our staff with more time to attend to the needs of you and your loved ones.
Beginning in 2005, the project was installed entirely by the staff of Your Catholic Cemeteries. Keeping it “in the family” ensured the highest quality of work and will extend the life of the new system.
“Installing Gethsemani’s irrigation was an incredible training opportunity for our staff,” says Superintendant of Archdiocesan Cemeteries, Tim Corbett. “Through this experience, our crew has a stronger understanding of cemetery operations and can apply that knowledge to the needs of our families.”
Now that the system is complete, all irrigation-related maintenance issues can be handled in-house with speedy and accurate results. To assist the staff while troubleshooting on the grounds, we have a hand held device called “RIC” (Remote Independent Control). Similar to a large television remote, “RIC” will be able to turn any section’s irrigation on or off with a touch of a button instantly locating a problem.
Prior to the new system, the staff was required to manually adjust the irrigation clocks, which consumed their time, reduced the effectiveness of the water available and exhausted the well. These new, computer-driven flow meters that we installed, calculate the amount of water needed to properly irrigate the cemetery and compares it with the water in the well. Now the efficiency of the well has been maximized and a shorter watering window is created. For families, this means less sprinkler interruptions when visiting their loved one.
The new irrigation system also includes drainage pipes located two feet below the ground. These pipes will collect the clean water rising up from the ground and redirect the flow keeping the cemetery grounds more accessible year-round. This will largely benefit anyone visiting their loved one from late fall to early spring.
Commonly found in professional golf courses and large-scale public parks, our new irrigation system is just beginning to reach the cemetery industry. “We feel that it’s always important to be mindful of innovative techniques when it comes to keeping our cemetery grounds accessible for our families,” says Corbett. “And since it’s a computer driven system, we are able to have more control. No more wasteful watering during the night when it rains.”
